About Sheowder
Sheowder is a free and open-source puzzle-adventure game. Play as Trincella, a country girl looking for her missing husband, and Ochiry, a thief determined to start a new life and prove herself. And also bake cakes.
Bake Cakes!
Find ingredients during your adventures to craft a wide variety of cakes: apple and orange cakes, short and long cakes, super and slop cakes, lead poisoning and yellowcakes, and more!
Fight Foes with Mage, and Cakes!
Harness the inner power of Sheowderains to take down a variety of foes. Eat cakes to gain buffs to take down tougher ones.
Level Up and Bake More Cakes!
Experience from fallen foes doesn't only make you stronger. Acquire special skills to leverage unique opportunities for Trincella and Ochiry. Like improving cake baking (which also makes you stronger).
Explore Sheowder and Bake Even More Cakes!
Meet new friends, uncover hidden secrets, and find even more ingredients to bake more cake!
Note
The game is not all about cake. But it is a pretty significant portion of the game.
Why Open Source?
Because games are better when you know what's put into them. It's like knowing all of the ingredients that went into a cake, which can help you infer how good it'll taste.
Other FAQs
My controller isn't working!
Controller support is implemented with an optional plugin. The Windows standard installation comes with this plugin, but the PKGBUILD and standalone jar do not. Please plug in or connect all controllers you plan on using before starting the game.
input4j requires special configurations on Linux to work properly. Please see here.
How do I install plugins?
For the Windows standard installation, put the jars (and their dependencies) in this directory:
%USERPROFILE%\scoop\persist\sheowder\plugins
Danger
Plugins can execute arbitrary Java code and have access to your personal files! Make sure you 100% trust the source of the plugin before installation.
Can I use Sheowder characters in my derivative works?
Yes, as long as your use does not detrimentally harm the project or is illegal in your jurisdiction.
Can I sell the game or plugins I make for it?
Yes, royalty free. Just remember to attribute Sheowder Group under CC BY 4.0 if you keep the original assets in the base game.
What are the minimum specs?
Please see the downloads page for more information.
Will there be updates to the game?
Yes, regularly. Stay in touch on the posts page!
Do you have any social medias?
No, even if they appear to be us.
Is the source code available on Git repositories?
No, not on GitHub, BitBucket, GitLab, or anywhere else. We wish to keep the git history private. There may be mirrors available.
How can I translate the game?
A tutorial can be found here!
Why don't you use Maven or Gradle?
The Ant build scripts are the simplest way to perform the build functions the projects require. Ant projects also have better integrations in a wide variety of other ways over Maven and Gradle with NetBeans.
How do I add the game as a dependency?
Download the source code and reference the output jar (NetBeans enables you to add entire projects as dependencies).
Can you implement APIs that enable me to add new characters, maps, or scenarios?
Unfortunately not. Plugins are primarily designed for accessibility. Additionally, a single plugin to add new scenarios or characters would also entitle you for tens of other APIs for modifying the game, taking away from core development time to the development and maintenance of such APIs.
Can I mod the game by replacing core classes in my plugin?
Yes, but only with --patch-module (or running on the classpath, but this is
not recommended). Putting your mod plugins in plugins will not work.
